3 Pieces of Motivation and Inspiration for Moms Looking to Start a Business

If you have dreams of starting your own business but feel that doing so is impossible in the face of motherhood, you certainly aren’t alone.

There’s a lot of controversy surrounding the idea of what’s “right” and “wrong” for mothers to do in terms of their careers. On one hand, there’s the belief that being a stay-at-home mom and homemaker represent the ultimate responsibilities and end-goals for women. On the flip side, other women feel that being a career-focused mother represents the ultimate sense of empowerment.

However, bear in mind that the working world as we know it has totally transformed.  The opportunities for women and businesses alike to flourish have never been more prevalent.

Some mothers are making a full-time living via mommy blogging. What once was a novelty in YouTube now represents brilliant passive income through videos about your passions. There’s more support out there for new businesses than ever: consider how the Nvidia Inception Program and similar programs have emerged to offer exposure and support to emerging businesses.

For moms on the fence about whether or not they want to go back to work or start their own projects, consider the following pieces of motivation and inspiration to both figure out what you want to do and get started on the right foot.

Talk Out Your Ideas

Support from your partner and family will ultimately make or break your passion project before it ever gets off the ground. Don’t be afraid to express your entrepreneurial desires to your support system, but be realistic about how you’re going to get from Point A to Point B.

Rather than say that you want to drop everything to start a business, reiterate that family comes first but you’re feeling unfulfilled in your current role. Just as you’d expect those in your life to be empathetic and understanding of your desires, be willing to listen to what they have to say as well. Who knows: they might be way more supportive than you think.

Start Your Project on the Side

While it may be tempting to drop everything and jump head-first into in the world of being your own boss, consider a side hustle first to get your feet wet with the concept of entrepreneurship. Part-time blogging and vlogging are great ways to see if you have the marketing chops to make your dreams a reality. Meanwhile, selling products on the site (think: affiliate or network marketing) can be a great way to introduce yourself to the craft of being an effective salesperson.

Focus on Your Passions

Finally, make it a point to find your passion in terms of starting your business. For example, you might find that being a consultant to other mothers or playing the role of educator via YouTube is more your speed versus selling products. Be willing to experiment and have patience as you focus on what makes you want to get out of bed every morning and work.

Entrepreneurship is not out of reach for mothers, plain and simple. With enough motivation and drive, you can sow the seeds of your own business while still playing the role of mom.

  1. I think it’s so important to focus on your passion – odds are, if you are passionate about something, someone else is too.
