A Beautiful Story About Forgiveness: A Review of ‘Isaiah Johnson and the Big Game’ by Author Esau McCaulley
There is nothing I love more than a good book, and Isaiah Johnson and the Big Game by Esau McCaulley is exactly that. I absolutely fell in love with this beautiful children’s book and am so happy to add it to my kids’ reading collection. Not only is it a wonderfully engaging story, but it also shares a powerful lesson about forgiveness that readers of all ages can learn from. Every once in a while, I come across a children’s book that stays with me long after I’ve turned the final page, and this is definitely one of those books.
While the story centers around young Isaiah and his championship baseball game, the heart of the book goes far beyond sports. At its core, this is a touching story about family, grace, and learning how to forgive when someone you love lets you down. These themes are handled with such care and authenticity that it’s impossible not to connect with Isaiah’s journey.
What I appreciate most about this book is its message. Forgiveness is such an important lesson, yet it’s one that can be difficult for both children and adults to understand and practice. When Isaiah experiences disappointment and hurt, readers are given an honest look at those feelings while also seeing the healing that can come through extending grace to others. In a world where people are often quick to hold onto anger and resentment, this story serves as a beautiful reminder that forgiveness has the power to restore relationships and bring people together. It’s a message we need more of today.
One of the things that makes this book so special is that its lesson never feels forced. Instead, the message unfolds naturally through the story, allowing readers to experience Isaiah’s emotions alongside him. It opens the door for meaningful conversations between parents and children about mistakes, second chances, and the importance of showing compassion to others.
And then there are the illustrations.
Emmanuel Boateng’s artwork is absolutely incredible. Every page is filled with warmth, emotion, and beautiful detail. What stood out to me most were the facial expressions. The details in each character’s face are everything. You can truly feel their emotions… whether it’s excitement, disappointment, frustration, sadness, or joy… simply by looking at them. The illustrations don’t just complement the story; they bring it to life in a way that makes readers feel deeply connected to the characters and their experiences.
This is the kind of book that lingers in your heart long after you’ve finished reading it. It’s beautifully written, thoughtfully illustrated, and filled with a message that feels both timeless and incredibly relevant.

I wholeheartedly recommend Isaiah Johnson and the Big Game. It is a beautifully crafted story about family, forgiveness, and grace that belongs on every child’s bookshelf. More importantly, it’s a reminder for all of us… children and adults alike… that forgiveness matters, second chances matter, and a little more grace could go a long way in the world we live in today.
