When Survival Ends & Healing Begins: My Review of He Never Let Go by Pam Good
Disclosure: I received a copy of He Never Let Go for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
Some books entertain you, some teach you something, and then there are books that quietly work their way into your heart and stay there long after you have turned the final page. He Never Let Go: Overcoming the Trauma of Mental Illness with God’s Love by Pam Good is that kind of book.
This is not an easy story to read… and I mean that in the most meaningful way. Pam Good opens the door to some incredibly painful parts of her life and invites readers to walk alongside her as she confronts trauma, rejection, shame, abandonment, mental illness, and the walls she built to survive. What touched me most was the honesty. There is no pretending that everything is fine, no neatly wrapped version of suffering, and no attempt to make the journey look easier than it was.
A Life Spent Surviving
From the outside, Pam appeared to have it all together. She worked hard, kept moving, and learned how to put on the kind of armor that can convince everyone… including ourselves… that we’re okay.
But beneath that armor was a woman carrying wounds that began early in life.
Growing up with a mother suffering from paranoid schizophrenia profoundly shaped Pam’s childhood and the way she viewed herself and the world around her. Rejection, shame, isolation, and feelings of unworthiness became things she carried quietly. Like so many people who have learned to survive difficult circumstances, perfectionism became a way to seek validation and create some sense of control.
And I think that’s one of the things that makes this memoir so relatable, even for readers whose experiences are completely different from Pam’s. We may not share her story, but many of us understand what it feels like to hide the parts of ourselves we don’t want anyone else to see.
When Survival Isn’t Enough
One of the most powerful ideas woven throughout He Never Let Go is the difference between surviving and actually living.
Sometimes the coping mechanisms that helped us get through one season of life aren’t the things that will carry us into the next one. Pam eventually reaches a point where the walls she has built can no longer hold everything inside. Her pain becomes impossible to outrun, and she finds herself wrestling not only with her past and her own sense of worth, but also with her faith and her relationship with God.
That part of the story really stayed with me.
Faith isn’t always presented as having all the answers. Sometimes faith looks like questioning. Sometimes it looks like anger, confusion, surrender, or simply hanging on when you aren’t sure what comes next. Pam’s willingness to share that struggle makes her story feel incredibly human.
A Story About Grace That Doesn’t Give Up
The title He Never Let Go becomes especially meaningful as Pam’s story unfolds.
Even when she felt lost.
Even when she questioned God.
Even when shame told her she wasn’t worthy.
Even when she couldn’t see a way forward.
He never let go.
That message of grace is at the heart of this memoir, and I found it incredibly moving. Pam doesn’t minimize the darkness she experienced in order to arrive at a happier ending. Instead, she shows readers that redemption can exist alongside the scars, and that healing can begin when we finally stop hiding.
There is something very powerful about that reminder because sometimes we can become so accustomed to carrying our pain that we forget we don’t have to carry it alone.
The Courage to Tell the Truth
Perhaps what I appreciated most about He Never Let Go is Pam’s willingness to be vulnerable.
Sharing the polished version of our lives is easy. Sharing the messy, painful, uncomfortable parts takes courage.
Pam tells the truth about her struggles, and in doing so, she creates space for other people to begin telling theirs. Her story speaks directly to anyone who has ever felt ashamed of their past, struggled with feelings of unworthiness, hidden behind a smile, or wondered whether they could ever truly be free from the things that have haunted them.
Her message is ultimately one of hope: your darkest chapter does not have to be the end of your story.
A Memoir That Can Meet Readers in Their Own Struggles
He Never Let Go is a deeply personal memoir, but I think its message reaches far beyond Pam’s individual story.
It encourages readers to look at the secrets they carry, the shame they have accepted as part of who they are, and the ways they may have learned to survive rather than live. It also reminds us that struggles can shape resilience and that unanswered prayers don’t necessarily mean unanswered love.
And perhaps most importantly, it reminds us that there is no shame in asking for help.
This book tackles serious subjects, including mental illness, trauma, self-abuse, and suicidal thoughts, so it may be an emotional read for some. But within that difficult subject matter is a message of grace, redemption, surrender, and hope that shines brightly.
My Final Thoughts
I finished He Never Let Go feeling like I had been entrusted with a very personal piece of someone’s life.
Pam Good’s story is heartbreaking in places, but it is also courageous, honest, and ultimately hopeful. I appreciated that she didn’t shy away from the difficult questions or try to make faith look perfect. Instead, she showed what it can look like to wrestle with God, wrestle with yourself, and eventually discover that grace was holding you even when you couldn’t feel it.
If you’ve ever wondered whether the things you’ve been through have the power to define your future, He Never Let Go offers a beautiful reminder that they don’t have to.
Sometimes healing begins when we stop hiding.
Sometimes freedom begins when we finally tell the truth.
And sometimes, when we look back at the moments when we thought we were completely alone, we discover that He never let go.
