How to Make Sure Your Pet’s Okay When You’re at Work (Because We All Worry)
Leaving for Work—Cue the Puppy Eyes
If you’ve ever tried to sneak out the door, only to see those big, sad eyes following you, you know the guilt is real. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a dog, a cat, or even a talkative cockatiel. Most of us can’t help but worry a little about our furry (or feathery) sidekicks while we’re away. You want them safe, cozy, and, let’s be honest—not completely tearing the house apart.
Start with Your Morning Routine
Alright, mornings are chaos enough, but squeezing in a little extra time for your pet really does pay off. A quick walk, a game of fetch, or even just a snuggle session can burn off some of their bounce (and maybe calm your nerves, too). The American Kennel Club says even older dogs appreciate a settled routine before you go. If you mix things up, pets can actually get more anxious—so keep it familiar if you can.
Creature Comforts—Literally
Comfort is key. If you’re gone all day, double-check your pet’s got fresh water, maybe toss in an extra bowl just in case. Leave out a cozy blanket or bed that smells like home, and if your animal loves a good “background vibe,” you could leave on a radio or TV at low volume. Some folks even set up calming playlists (yep, it’s a thing). It helps pets chill out and not go on a barking/zoomies rampage the minute you’re gone.

And don’t forget the temp! On those days when it’s crazy hot or freezing outside, make sure your house is a safe zone. It might sound a bit intense, but thinking about a whole house heat load calculation, even in a general sense, actually makes sense—especially if your home gets stuffy. Fans or smart thermostats can be lifesavers, and popping open a window a crack never hurts if it’s safe to do so.
Toys, Treats, and Distractions (A Little Goes a Long Way)
A bored pet is usually a mischievous pet. Scatter favorite toys around or stuff a treat into a puzzle toy to make them work for it while you’re gone. For cats, leave cardboard boxes or window perches where they can watch everything outside (the squirrel show is never canceled). If you’ve never tried a snuffle mat or a slow-feeder bowl for dogs, honest truth—they’re game-changers.
Cameras and Check-ins, If You’re That Kind of Person
I used to think pet cams were extra, but trust me, they’re fun and super helpful for peace of mind. Many even let you talk to your pet. Popping in via camera or having a neighbor check on your animal midday can also ease separation anxiety.
A Quick Pep Talk Before You Go
So sure, your pet misses you while you’re out being a responsible adult. But with a little prep—morning cuddles, cozy corners, thoughtful distractions, and a safe home—they’ll be okay (and probably nap a lot more than you think). Remember, you’re doing a good job. The best greeting ever is waiting for you at the end of the day, tail wags and all.
