8 Things to Sort Out Before Spending a Year Abroad

Spending a year abroad sounds so wonderfully straightforward when you describe it as “taking a year abroad.”

Book a flight. Find somewhere to live. Off you go.

Unfortunately, twelve months requires slightly more planning than that.

There are visas to check, money to organize, healthcare to think about, and a surprisingly large number of loose ends just waiting to trip you up.

The good news is that most of it can be sorted before you leave.

And it should be.

You have an entire year somewhere new ahead of you. You do not want to spend the first month dealing with things you could have handled from your sofa.

To prevent that from happening, follow these eight tips below:

1. Make Sure Your Plan Is Actually Legal

You have found the country. You know roughly when you want to go. You may already be looking at apartments.

Before getting any further, check your visa situation.

Can you stay for the full year? Can you work? Does remote work count? Do you need to register once you arrive?

These are boring questions with fairly important answers.

Get them now, before you have paid deposits and started telling everyone exactly when you are leaving.

    2. Work Out What You Are Doing With All Your Stuff

Unless you are usually good at owning very little, you probably have far too much stuff to take with you for a year.

Decide what stays, what goes into storage, and what you should probably finally get rid of.

Do this earlier than you think. Sorting through an entire home the weekend before your flight is nobody’s idea of fun.

You may also discover that paying to store something for twelve months costs more than replacing it when you eventually come back.

      3. Make Sure You Can Actually Access Your Money

Your bank card working perfectly at home does not guarantee a trouble-free year abroad.

Check foreign transaction fees, ATM charges, and whether your bank needs to know you are leaving. It is also worth having a second card, too.

Cards get lost, blocked, and occasionally swallowed by machines, so packing your wallet properly before travelling abroad is worth a little thought.

Having another way to pay will feel very smart when your main card stops working on a busy Saturday morning.

        4. Sort Out Your Health Cover

A year is plenty long enough for something to go wrong, even if you are usually annoyingly healthy.

Find out what healthcare you can access locally and what you would have to pay for yourself.

If you need additional cover, international insurance brokers can help you compare policies from different insurers rather than trying to decipher them all yourself.

Do it before you leave. Insurance is much easier to think about when you are not already sitting in a doctor’s waiting room.

          5. Check What Is Attached To Your Phone Number

Before cancelling your current mobile contact, think about everything that knows your phone number.

Your bank probably does. So does your email account, and possibly a collection of services you have completely forgotten about.

Changing those details from abroad can be surprisingly annoying.

Have a quick look through your important accounts before you go and see which ones still rely on your current number.

If keeping it active for another year is inexpensive, do it.

            6. Deal With The Things That Will Keep Running

Have a proper look through your bank statements before you go.

There will be things you obviously need to keep paying and probably a few you can stop for the year.

Then there will be that subscription you have apparently been paying since 2022 and cannot remember signing up for.

Cancel or pause whatever you will not use.

Put the important stuff on automatic payment and forget about it.

              7. Do Not Leave Prescriptions To The Last Minute

If you take medication regularly, figure out what happens to it while you are abroad.

Can you take enough with you? Will you need a new prescription locally? Is the same medication even sold there?

                Ask those questions before leaving.

Get copies of prescriptions and any useful information from your doctor while you are at it.

Trying to organise all of this from abroad is not impossible, but doing it before you go is far less annoying.

                8. Keep Some Money For Coming Home

Do not spend every last bit of your budget on the year itself.

                  Coming home costs money too.

There may be flights, temporary accommodation, transport, and a slightly alarming first grocery shop before normal life gets going again.

Keep a separate amount aside for it and pretend it does not exist while you are away.

You may end up staying abroad instead, which is fine. Having money left over has rarely ruined anybody’s plans. Running out of it certainly has.

                  To End

A year abroad should come with plenty of surprises.

Discovering your bank card does not work, your prescription has run out, or you have been paying for an empty gym membership for ten months should not be among them.

Sort of the boring, practical stuff before you go.

Then you can spend your year enjoying the surprises that are actually worth having.
