Savvy Money Saving Tips

4 Ways to Save Money on Your Energy Bills Year-Round

When the weather gets colder, people often worry about their energy bills and start to cut back, but what many people don’t realize is that utilities can be expensive year-round. From air-con to extra fans, the summer months can also see a spike in your bills, especially if there’s a heatwave. Here are some ideas for you to save money on your utilities, no matter what the weather.

1)Get appliances serviced

Many people neglect to get tools such as their air conditioning unit or furnace serviced, only getting them checked when something goes wrong. However, regular servicing can help keep appliances running efficiently, which saves you money. For example, if you have a dirty filter, your air-con unit will take longer to cool down your rooms, so you spend more. Regular service helps you save money and is also essential for safety reasons.

2) Have old windows replaced

Another home improvement that is helpful year-round is getting your windows replaced. If you have had the same windows for a while, they may not be energy efficient, and it’s not just in the wintertime that windows matter. If you have windows installed in Shrewsbury from Wombourne Windows, you’ll notice the difference during the summer months when they reflect heat, meaning you spend less on air conditioning.

3) Check your insulation

You might not pay much attention to your insulation in the warmer months, perhaps putting off checking it until it gets colder. What most people don’t realize, however, is that insulation can also help your home maintain a comfortable temperature in the summer. It creates a barrier that helps reflect heat when it’s hot, so you spend less powering your air-con. Insulation is cheap and generally easy to install, so check whether you need thicker insulation in areas such as:

*Floors

*Walls

*The roof

*Around tanks and pipes

Just a little extra insulation could save you money in the long-term, as well as making your home more environmentally friendly.

4) Keep your home comfortable without spending money

Ideally, turning on your heating or air conditioning should be a last resort, so make sure you know how to warm or cool your home without turning on appliances

In summer – open the tops of your windows to get a cool breeze through your home. Keep blinds closed when possible and close off unused rooms, so the cool air is directed into the rooms you’re using. Try using a fan with a bowl of ice in front of it, which can create a cold breeze without needing air con.

In winter – layer up with warm clothes if you feel chilly before you start turning up the heat. Baking, using hot water bottles, and drinking hot drinks can all help you stay warm cheaply. However, if it gets very cold, you should leave your heating on low at all times to avoid a burst pipe.

Nobody wants to spend their hard-earned paycheck on utilities, so follow the above tips, and you can save energy and spend less.

Having windows that let air in around them, because of age, is the worst. It gets so cold in Winter if there’s even the slightest break in the seal. I’ve been there, done that.
