Why You Should Consider Getting Your Cat Microchipped

Having a cat in your life can really help you have a better life. There’s something about having a happy, purring cat sat on your lap that can make all your worries disappear for a moment. So, it’s no surprise that people love having a cat in their own home. So if you are planning on getting a cat, then you’ll want to make sure that you give them lots of love and attention.

However, it doesn’t just end there. You should also want to make sure that you give your cat the best protection possible, particularly if they get lost or go missing. This is why it’s important to get your cat microchipped, as this way you can make sure that if they do wander off, then you have given them the best chance of being found and safely returned home to you.

The Importance of Microchipping Your Cat

Although you probably don’t want to think about it, cats can go missing for a number of reasons. They might have just gone for a wander around, or they might have got locked up in someone’s garage, since they are curious creatures. This sort of thing is fine as they can safely get back home by themselves most of the time. However, what happens when they get curious about a delivery van and end up going on a journey to a completely new town?

What happens if your cat gets scared and runs off, what happens if they get involved in an accident? These are things that you can’t predict. You might have a collar on your cat, however, that isn’t good enough. A collar is easily lost and might come off. You should also be careful with collars in case your cat gets stuck on a tree whilst climbing. A microchip is far safer and also more permanent. It also means that there are no issues when having to resolve who owns the cat.

When Should You Microchip Your Cat?

If you are thinking of getting your cat microchipped, then there is no minimum age to get it done. Most vets will decide to do the implant at the same time when the kitten is getting vaccinated or neutered. You should also make sure that your cat is microchipped before you allow them outside.

You might not have to worry about even getting your kitten microchipped if you get them from a breeder, as most will ensure that their kittens are chipped before they go to their new home and most shelters will have their cats microchipped before they rehome them. You need to make sure that your cat is microchipped though, particularly if you are planning on taking them abroad. As it is compulsory in some places.

Additional Benefits of Microchipping

A microchip doesn’t just help bring your cat home to you if they ever get lost. There are also a couple of other benefits that come with getting your cat microchipped. The most useful one being that you can get a microchipped cat flap, which will stop other cats from coming into your home. This is great if you live in a busy area and want to make sure that your cat sees your home as their safe area.

You’ll easily be able to claim ownership of the cat if needs be as well. Don’t worry though this can be changed in the future, as you can simply contact the microchip database and complete the relevant forms to ensure that the new owner’s details are linked to your cat’s microchip. This is good, as sometimes you might need to sell your cat, so at least it can be easily sorted.

These are just a few reasons to why you should get your cat microchipped and hopefully you can now tell how important it is to get your cat microchipped. Getting a microchip will just give you a bit of peace of mind if your cat likes to go exploring outside. You should never stop them from doing what they want though, remember. You should be trying to make sure that they are as happy as they can be. You can check out this article here about more information for keeping your cat happy.
