Savvy Tips & Helpful Hints

What is the best way to prevent a pest infestation?

Your home ideally should be your haven, so you apparently don’t want it to be a playground for pests. If you’re just moving into the property and it’s still pest-free, you have a chance to prevent a pest infestation. But what is the best way to do so?

The best way to prevent a pest infestation

Whether you’re trying to prevent pest infestation or exterminate them in their minions, one of the best ways to control pests is to call expert pest control technicians. They typically have the required know-how to deal with different kinds of pests as well as the best practices to follow. If you’re looking for reliable pest control services in St George Utah, consider contacting Pest Control St George Utah. At the very least, a pest control expert will have specialized equipment, chemicals, and skill to save you time and energy.

That said, you must keep your home tidy to prevent a pest infestation. Pests are attracted to trash, so leaving grains and food particles in your kitchen is almost like inviting them in. Furthermore, professional pest control by an expert will do little good if you fail to do what’s necessary to keep pests at bay thereafter; for example, eliminating junk. At best, the pest control wouldn’t last as long as it ought to before the little beings start creeping in again.

So, what are these practices you need to adhere to prevent a pest infestation?

Best practices to prevent pest infestation

1. Don’t keep trash around

Pests can be attracted to the food remnants in your trash. It’s therefore essential to empty your garbage daily and keep it outside or in the garage. Using trash cans with lids and thoroughly cleaning food containers before disposal can also help to deter pests. By taking these steps, you can reduce the likelihood of pests entering your home.

2. Keep food in tightly shut containers

Pests are experts at finding and accessing food, and certain species have enhanced olfactory abilities that allow them to detect food from great distances. To prevent pests from entering your home in search of food, store groceries in containers that are both airtight and odor-blocking. This applies to all food types, including items left on the counter and those stored in the pantry. By using secure storage containers, you can make it more difficult for pests to locate and access food sources in your home.

3. Seal up holes

Preventing pests from entering your home is crucial for effective pest control. In addition to using screens on windows and keeping exterior doors closed, it’s helpful to regularly inspect the inside and outside of your home for potential entry points.

These may include cracks or holes in the foundation, loose siding, roof, or utility lines. When you find any openings, be sure to seal or fill them right away. This not only keeps pests out but also prevents the gaps from worsening over time.

4. Monitor your landscaping

One rare-to-find tip to prevent pests from taking up residence in or around your home is carefully examining your landscaping. Keep wood piles away from exterior walls, clean out gutters regularly, and trim the grass. Additionally, pay attention to any changes in your home’s foundation, siding, or roofing, as pests can cause damage from the outside.

By taking these steps, you can protect your home and reduce the likelihood of pests becoming a problem.

5. Clean your home thoroughly

You can remove potential food sources that might attract pests by wiping, mopping, or vacuuming every corner of the house. In addition, deep cleaning your home allows you to identify and eliminate potential breeding grounds for pests.

For example, small flies can multiply in neglected drains, but using drain cleaner can help prevent this. In addition, scheduling a deep clean can help keep pests at bay and maintain a clean and healthy home.

6. Sanitize, sanitize, sanitize

Don’t forget to sanitize your soft surfaces, too! Beds, couches, and rugs can all be havens for bedbugs and fleas. Anything that can go in the washing machine should get a good rinse on a regular basis.

As for your mattress and cushions, start by giving them a thorough vacuuming and then spraying them with a disinfectant. It’s important to pay attention to both hard surfaces like counters and floors, and soft surfaces like these to help prevent pest infestations in your home.

Final thoughts

Some pest infestations are worse than others, so it’s good to know when to call a professional exterminator. For example, while you may be able to effectively handle a seasonal house fly problem yourself, the situation is more tricky when termites are eating up the wooden parts of your home.

You should also reach out to an exterminator if your pest problem keeps recurring after all your DIY efforts.
