The Only Puppy Guide You Need to Take the Best Care of Your Little One

Discover the ultimate puppy guide to take the best care of your little one to give him the best possible start in life here.

About 60.2 million American households have at least one dog. If you’re getting ready to bring home a puppy to your household, it can be an exciting and nerve-wracking time.

To ensure you have the best experience with your new puppy, there are a few things you need to know. Follow this puppy guide to ensure you’re ready to welcome your new four-legged friend to their new home.

Start Before Your Pup Comes Home

It’s smart to start educating yourself before you bring your new family member home. Start by reading articles like this one and watching videos online. You could even sign up for a puppy training course for when your puppy comes home.

This will ensure that you’re educated and ready for your puppy and not scrambling at the last minute.

Puppy Proof Your Home

Your new home is going to be a huge and exciting new playground in the eyes of your puppy. This means you need to protect both you and your new puppy by puppy-proofing your home.

Hide anything chewable. This includes loose items and electrical cabling. You can hide the cables behind or under furniture or under covers.

Block the puppy’s access to any rooms where a bathroom accident could cause damage.

When you think you’re done, get down on the puppy’s level and crawl through your home. You’ll look silly, but this is the only way to spot potential problems that you wouldn’t normally see.

Register With a Vet

If you already have pets, then you probably already have a vet that you go to. Make an appointment to bring in your new puppy and get them established.

If your puppy is your family’s first pet, then you need to locate and register with a new vet. Start by asking other pet owners that you know for recommendations. You can also read reviews online.

Begin Crate Training Early

The crate is the puppy’s den or safe space. Make this a happy space by hiding treats inside. This will teach the puppy that their crate is a positive and safe place to go.

Don’t use their crate as a punishment. Have your puppy start with short periods of time in the crate and work your way up to longer periods of time.

Potty Training

Offer your puppy a potty break every 20-30 minutes. You should also take them out 15 minutes after eating, before bedtime, and before playtime. This will teach them the proper place to go to the bathroom.

If they have an accident in the house, immediately take them outside. Don’t stick their nose in it as punishment. This will only teach them to hide their accidents.

Follow This Puppy Guide and Welcome Your New Pup Home

By following this puppy guide, you will set you and your family up for success with your new four-legged family member. Start by educating yourself. Then prepare your home and make it safe for puppies.

Once your puppy is home, register with a vet, and begin crate and potty training.
