Getting Outside More: Must-Have Essentials for Hiking and Outdoor Adventures

If you visit Deliciously Savvy often, then you already know how much I love getting outside, enjoying the fresh air, and taking in all the beauty that nature has to offer! There is just something special about stepping away from the everyday hustle and bustle, getting out into the sunshine, and enjoying everything the great outdoors has to offer. Whether it’s a peaceful morning walk, an afternoon exploring wooded trails, or a weekend hiking adventure, spending time outdoors is one of my favorite ways to unwind, recharge, and enjoy life. Living in the beautiful Poconos makes it even easier to appreciate nature, and we love taking advantage of every opportunity to get outside and explore!

Of course, enjoying your time outdoors is even better when you’re comfortable and properly prepared. Having the right footwear, clothing, and gear can make a big difference, especially when you’re spending hours walking, hiking, or exploring different types of terrain. One often-overlooked part of outdoor preparation is proper foot support. After all, your feet do a lot of work on those adventures! That’s why finding the right footwear and quality sports insoles is worth considering when putting together your outdoor adventure essentials.

And let’s not forget that spending time outdoors is about more than just enjoying beautiful scenery. It’s also a wonderful way to incorporate more movement into your daily routine and support your overall wellness. The CDC highlights several health benefits of physical activity, including better sleep, improved heart health, and reduced anxiety. Sounds like another great reason to lace up those sneakers and head outside!

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or someone who simply enjoys a leisurely walk and a little fresh air, being prepared can help make every outing more enjoyable. So, if you’re ready to spend more time exploring, enjoying nature, and making memories outdoors, let’s take a look at some of the must-have essentials you’ll want to bring along on your next adventure!

Supportive shoes and insoles for hiking.

1. Comfortable Hiking Shoes or Trail Sneakers

Your footwear is arguably one of the most important parts of any outdoor adventure! The right shoes can help provide stability, traction, and comfort while navigating everything from smooth walking paths to rocky trails and uneven terrain.

Look for hiking shoes or trail sneakers that fit properly, offer good traction, and provide the support you need for your particular activity. Remember that everyone’s feet are different, so what works for one person might not work for another. Take the time to find footwear that feels comfortable and gives your feet the support they need.

2. Supportive Socks That Keep Your Feet Comfortable

Never underestimate the importance of a good pair of hiking socks! The wrong socks can lead to uncomfortable rubbing, excess moisture, and blisters, which can quickly take the fun out of an otherwise wonderful day outdoors.

Look for moisture-wicking materials that help keep your feet dry and comfortable. Merino wool and performance synthetic blends are popular choices for hiking because they help manage moisture and regulate temperature.

A properly fitted pair of socks can also help reduce friction inside your shoes, making those longer walks and hikes much more enjoyable.

3. Proper Foot Support and Insoles

Taking care of your feet should be a priority whenever you’re planning to spend time outdoors. After all, your feet do a lot of work carrying you along those trails!

Depending on your footwear and individual needs, supportive insoles can help improve the fit and feel of your shoes. Look for options designed for your particular activity, whether you’re walking, running, hiking, or participating in other sports.

It’s worth paying attention to arch support, cushioning, and overall comfort when choosing insoles. The right fit can help make your footwear feel more comfortable during longer outings.

4. A Comfortable Backpack

A good backpack is another outdoor essential, especially if you’re planning a longer hike. You’ll want something comfortable, lightweight, and large enough to carry everything you need without feeling bulky.

Look for adjustable shoulder straps, breathable materials, and multiple compartments to help keep everything organized. If you’re heading out for a longer adventure, a backpack with a supportive waist strap can help distribute the weight more comfortably.

Not sure what to pack? The National Park Service offers a helpful guide to hiking safety and essential gear that can help you prepare for your next outdoor adventure. It’s a fantastic resource for beginners and experienced hikers alike!

5. Plenty of Water and Hydration Essentials

Staying hydrated is incredibly important when spending time outdoors, particularly during warmer weather or more strenuous activities.

Always bring enough water for the length of your adventure, and consider investing in a reusable insulated water bottle or hydration pack. These make it easier to keep water accessible while you’re exploring.

I also recommend packing a few healthy snacks to keep your energy levels up. Trail mix, protein bars, nuts, and fruit are all easy options to bring along.

Staying hydrated is key and having filtration is an added plus.

6. Sun Protection Is a Must

Even when the weather isn’t particularly hot, protecting yourself from the sun is important. Make sure to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a comfortable hat before heading out.

The American Academy of Dermatology also shares some wonderful tips for applying sunscreen properly, including choosing broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and remembering to reapply throughout the day.

A lightweight long-sleeved shirt can also be helpful when spending extended periods outdoors. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen as directed, especially if you’re sweating or spending several hours outside.

7. A Small First Aid Kit

It’s always better to be prepared! A small first aid kit is something I recommend keeping in your hiking backpack, even for shorter adventures.

Include essentials such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister care products, gauze, and any personal necessities you might need. You never know when a little extra preparation will come in handy.

8. Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Weather conditions can change quickly, especially when exploring mountain trails and wooded areas. Dressing in layers is one of the easiest ways to stay comfortable.

Choose breathable fabrics that help manage moisture, and bring along a lightweight jacket or rain layer when needed. Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely will make your outdoor adventures that much better.

9. A Phone, Portable Charger, and Navigation Tools

Your phone can be a helpful tool when exploring the outdoors, but don’t rely on it as your only navigation option. Cell service isn’t always reliable in remote areas, so consider downloading trail maps ahead of time or bringing a traditional map and compass.

A portable charger is another smart addition to your backpack, especially if you’re planning to spend several hours away from home. And, of course, always let someone know where you’re going if you’re heading out on a longer or more remote hike.

Before heading out, it’s also a smart idea to review these outdoor trip planning and safety tips from the National Park Service. A little preparation can go a long way toward keeping your outdoor adventures safe and enjoyable!

10. A Camera to Capture the Memories

One of my favorite things about exploring the outdoors is getting to enjoy all the beautiful scenery along the way. From gorgeous mountain views and peaceful lakes to interesting wildlife and colorful fall foliage, there is always something worth capturing!

Whether you use your smartphone or bring along a camera, take a few moments to capture those special memories. Sometimes the simplest outdoor adventures turn into our favorite experiences.

Make the Most of Every Outdoor Adventure!

Getting outside doesn’t have to involve an elaborate hiking trip or an entire weekend away. Sometimes it’s simply taking a walk, exploring a nearby trail, enjoying a beautiful afternoon, or finding a new place to experience nature.

The important thing is to make time for yourself, enjoy some fresh air, and stay active in ways that make you happy. And remember, a little preparation goes a long way! Having comfortable footwear, proper foot support, plenty of water, and the right outdoor essentials can help make your adventures even more enjoyable.

Living in the Poconos has given us so many opportunities to appreciate the beauty of nature, and I hope this inspires you to get outside and explore a little more, too!
