Getting a Job if You Have a Criminal Record

Having a criminal record can feel like having a stain that is impossible to remove. Sadly, there are many employers out there that will discriminate against you because you have a criminal record, even if your offense is something completely unrelated and wouldn’t hurt your ability to work.

Thankfully, there are a couple of ways that you can get around this.

Know your rights! If your conviction has been “spent” then you don’t actually need to tell an employer about it. In other words; if the conviction is old, it doesn’t affect your chance of getting a job.

Some employers in the country are happy to welcome people with criminal records. You might find it a lot easier to both find a job and also be accepted as part of the team in these locations.

Don’t be afraid to talk about your criminal record. If your employer points it out, it’s best to be honest about it so that you can have a proper conversation with them. If they are understanding, then it shouldn’t affect your ability to get a job with them.

If you have the skills, you will be a valuable team member. Many places can overlook your criminal record if they believe that it won’t harm your ability to work and if you can provide value to their company.
