Publisher’s Book Summary: Ninja is a pit bull who would rather die than hurt another dog. When she purposefully loses in the fighting ring of a cruel junkyard owner, Mr. Fergusen, she is punished and left for dead at the edge of a nearby forest. A tribe of stray junkyard dogs finds her and gives her a new name, Maytag. They nurse her back to health and welcome her into their secret home inside the northern junkyard’s mountains of wrecked cars, appliances, tires, and trains. For the first time, Maytag feels love and is incredibly relieved to be free of Mr. Fergusen’s fighting ring.

But her relief is short-lived.

Saab, the aggressive Rottweiler of the southern junkyard, plans to conquer the north with the help of a vengeful forest wolf. If the junkyard becomes a warzone, Mr. Fergusen will surely take the strays to the put-down place. When Saab’s plan is set in motion, Maytag must decide if her new friends are worth fighting for.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bryan Reilly is a marketing copywriter, content creator, and author of The Junkyard, an award-winning middle-grade fantasy that explores kindness as courage, compassion, and found family. His love for movies and books such as Watership Downby Richard Adams and The Body by Stephen King inspired The Junkyard, which began as an emotional pen-to-paper reaction to Star Wars: Episode I.

Bryan started ‘writing for his livelihood’ in 2005, after using corporate severance money to rent a New York City loft for the Unpublished Underground, an art gallery for aspiring writers. Opening and running an ‘underground loft’ was truly a unique experience. He learned how to edit collaboratively, bind and promote materials, and bid a hasty farewell to corporate severance money!

Bryan lives in Connecticut with his wife, son, and story-inspiring pit bull mix.

MY REVIEW

The Junkyard by Bryan Reilly is one of those books that tugged at my heart from the very beginning. As someone who absolutely loves dogs, I’ll be honest and say that the premise was a difficult one for me at first. Ninja’s story and what she endures is heartbreaking, and I found myself feeling so sad for her right from the start. But despite the difficult subject matter, this turned out to be such an amazing and beautifully told story. And oh my goodness, how much I LOVE Ninja! She is such a special character, and watching her journey unfold and seeing her strength, compassion, and heart made me root for her every step of the way.

One of the things I appreciated most about The Junkyard is Bryan Reilly’s writing style. His descriptions are incredible, and he has a wonderful way of bringing the setting and characters to life. I truly felt as if I was there watching everything unfold around me—the junkyard, the dogs, the danger, the friendships, and all of the emotions that come with it. Any author who can make you feel like you’ve stepped right into the pages and are experiencing the story alongside the characters has a very special talent, and I definitely felt that while reading this book.

There is so much more to this story than what initially meets the eye. Beneath the heartbreaking circumstances is a story about survival, friendship, courage, loyalty, and finding a place where you finally feel safe and loved. Ninja/Maytag’s journey is emotional, intense, and at times difficult to read, but it is also incredibly moving. I found myself completely invested in these dogs and their world, and I loved watching the relationships and bonds develop throughout the story.

It’s easy to see why The Junkyard has received so much recognition, including the Literary Titan Gold Book Award in the Children’s Book category, the BlueInk Review Notable Book Seal, and 5-Star Review Awards from Reader’s Favorite and LitPick.com. This is a memorable read with a beautifully descriptive writing style and a main character who completely stole my heart. If you love stories about animals, courage, friendship, and the power of finding your own family, I definitely recommend giving The Junkyard a read.
