Publisher’s Book Summary: AN INTERNET JOKE. AN EVIL GENIUS. A HERO IS BORN.

Gifted with a brain that works like a video recorder, twelve-year-old aspiring detective Elmo Fitzroy — famous on YouTube, thanks to his mother, as “Muppit Boy” because of really humiliating videos — becomes embroiled in a world-domination plot hatched by an evil scientist out to control humanity with deadly allergies.

Mo’s life plan is simple: ditch his dweeby childhood alter ego and fly under the radar to survive middle school. It backfires big time when he helps his Big Brother mentor — a police detective — investigate an old woman in a clown mask who robs people of their hearing aids.

Little does he realize that chasing clues with friends Barney Kettlewick and Kashvi Jindal will lead to a battle with ugly shoes, pursuit by chainsaw-wielding maniacs, an embarrassingly public rescue by a California condor, a meeting with Homeland Security, and his ADHD soaring into overdrive.

The kid who’s always been a joke must somehow become a hero to save his family, friends, and, well, the whole world.

MY REVIEW

Some books are fun while you’re reading them and others stay with you long after you finish. Muppit Boy and the Allergies of Evil by Michael J. Bowler is one of those books for me and it is a fabulous read for middle schoolers and beyond. It’s funny, weird, emotional, and full of heart, but what really made it stand out for me…. was how real the characters felt underneath all the crazy adventure.

Right away, I found myself rooting for Elmo “Mo” Fitzroy. He’s awkward, smart, overwhelmed, funny without trying to be, and just trying to figure himself out. Bowler makes him feel like a real kid instead of a perfect storybook hero, and that’s what made me connect with him so quickly.

The story itself is wild in the best way. There are evil scientists, dangerous allergies, creepy clown masks, chainsaw maniacs, and nonstop chaos, but somehow it all works together and I loved it. The book moves fast, keeps you entertained, and still finds time for real emotional moments. It is so good…. you can read this in a day as you will not want to put it down.

I will say…. that what I appreciated most from this incredible book….was the way Bowler handled ADHD and feeling different. It never feels preachy or forced. Mo struggles with embarrassment and self-doubt, but the story also shows his strengths and his incredible heart. I think a lot of kids will see themselves in him, especially the ones who sometimes feel out of place.

The friendships and relationships in this book also felt genuine. Nothing was overly dramatic or fake as the characters care about each other, and that emotional connection gives the story a lot of warmth which I love and appreciate.

I will admit that what truly makes this book special… is that it balances humor and heart perfectly. It’s fun and ridiculous at times, but underneath all of that, it’s really a story about acceptance, confidence, and learning that being different isn’t something to hide.

By the end of the book, I honestly just felt happy that I had read it and it is hard to put down which is a huge plus for me too. I love getting lost in a good book and that is exactly what this incredible book did. Muppit Boy and the Allergies of Evil is creative, funny, heartfelt, and easy to connect with plus it’s the kind of middle grade story that entertains kids while also reminding them that they don’t have to fit perfectly into everyone else’s idea of normal to matter.
