5 Tips to Find Reputable Dog Breeders

Deciding to bring a new pet into your home is a big decision. Sometimes you need guidance on which dog would fit best into your family and lifestyle, or how to care for them correctly. You also want to locate healthy puppies with accurate and thorough records.

If you are looking for help to find reputable dog breeders, here are a few steps to follow.

Find Reputable Dog Breeders

Friends are a great place to start for recommendations on breeders they have used and trusted. In fact, it is a good idea to get referrals from at least two people who have used a particular breeder.

If you already have an established veterinarian, they are also a good source for locating a responsible breeder.

Another place to search is the ACK Marketplace.

Take a Look Around

A reputable breeder will allow you to come to their place and is happy to show you where the dogs and their puppies live. Make note of the conditions as they should be well-maintained, very clean with lots of space.

The animals should be lively, look healthy, and excited to have company. There should be signs of toys for the dogs to play with and evidence of proper exercise and social skills.

Watch Out for Too Many Different Breeds

A good sign is when there are just a few breeds represented. Registered dog breeders will stick to one or two specialty breeds.

They will have the best conditions, food, medicines for those exact breeds to produce the healthiest litters with the best chance for a long life.

If you are in the market for a bulldog, here is a top french bulldog breeder.

Spend Time With the Puppy

The breeder should allow you plenty of time to spend with the puppy and the parents. There should not be any pressure or impatience to move along.

Responsible dog breeders welcome all your questions and work hard to have the correct answers.

Ideally, you will have a particular breed in mind and will have sought out a breeder who specializes in that dog. Come prepared with a list of questions on the care and needs for that breed.

Request Full Medical History

Request a complete medical history for the puppy as well as the parents. Become familiar with any specific health concerns for that breed.

Be careful of vague answers or breeders unfamiliar or unwilling to help. A good breeder wants the best home for their puppies and will be patient and full of information to help you make the best decision for your family.

Never ask to take a puppy away from the litter or its mother until the eight-week mark. This time is needed to develop both physically and socially before starting a new life with you.

Also, be very cautious to not spay or neuter too soon. There are some breeders who suggest it as early as six weeks. This is damaging to the animal long term. This procedure should only take place after puberty.

The Decision

Bringing a new dog into your family is a great idea that can bring years of happiness on both sides. If you are looking to find reputable dog breeders, your local AKC chapter is a good place to start.

These are great tips for someone in the market. They arrested a bad breeder here about two weeks ago. She has cages of dogs stacked on top of each other where the urine and feces ran down.. I am thinking they said over 400 dogs.

Oh my goodness…. that is just horrible. I cannot believe what some people will do for money….. or for that …. not sure or I cannot even wrap my head around it. Crazy and sorry that there are people like that out there.
