It is no secret to anyone that knows me that I love my fur babies… my pooches Chewy & Harley and my cat Shadow. These chews are much lower in calories than traditional dog biscuits and more digestible than traditional rawhide bones which is everything to me. They also have a smaller ingredient panel … Tannery Free USA-sourced bovine collagen, natural caramel coloring and bison! That is it and it really does not get simpler than that. There is absolutely no flour in these chews and they contain no added sugar or salt and are easier on teeth than antlers and hard cheese chews plus they are more natural ad tastier than plastic or nylon and they are 100% made and sourced in the USA which is unlike most pet treats on the market today.

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is group of proteins that provide the structure for tissues like cartilage, skin and tendons. It’s been called the “glue” which holds bodies together whether dogs, cats or humans. Pet nutritionists say the benefits of collagen for dogs may include improved bone, joint, skin, hair, nail and digestive health.

Where does collagen come from?

Collagen can be found in most animals and even some plants. But the vast majority of commercial collagen for human nutritional supplements, gelatin and dog treats comes from bovine hide—rawhide. Most of this rawhide is processed at leather tanneries. That’s where the hair is chemically removed and the hides split into layers. The top layer is processed into leather. The bottom layers go to make collagen products and traditional rawhide dog chews.

Isn’t rawhide bad for dogs?

There is nothing inherently bad about rawhide & dogs have been chewing it for thousands of years. The biggest concern is tannery chemicals that may remain in the hide after processing, particularly in traditional rawhide dog chews. These unhairing chemicals, as well as whiteners, bleaches and stabilizers can remain in rawhide bones and rolls, making them potentially dangerous for dogs. Great Shapes does not get their rawhide from tanneries for this very reason!

Can’t dogs choke on rawhide?

Poorly made rawhide chews made from sheets of hide can be a problem. Our chews are double-ground, extruded and cured so they are tough but pose no choking hazard.

Are collagen chews digestible?

Yes, the finer texture and food grade enzymes used to process the collagen make Great Shapes chews nearly 100% digestible.
