Publisher’s Book Summary: Cooper Knox joined the Gator Island Public Library’s weekly book club to get his mind off his parents selling his late grandfather’s motel—not help solve a missing persons case.

But old Mr. O’Malley has become a dear friend, so when the local news reveals his boat washed ashore unoccupied, Cooper’s determined to find his fellow club member. The only clue? A crude map left behind by Mr. O’Malley.

As summer days grow hotter on Gator Island, twelve-year-old Cooper, along with Mr. O’Malley’s granddaughter, Penny, navigate the winding canals and marshes in hopes of finding the missing bookworm. But following the map also means plunging into the Dark Swamp, where a legendary monster is said to be lurking….

Can Cooper find Mr. O’Malley AND save Pops’ motel before it’s too late?

Praise for Quagmire:
“This novel is perfect for third or fourth graders looking for contemporary realism with a dash of mystery and endearingly quirky characters.” —Kirkus Reviews

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sam Campbell began writing his first novel at the age of fourteen, which was (surprise surprise) total garbage. He hopes he has improved since then. When he’s not writing, he likes to read, work out, and watch movies with his family. He also suffers from a terrible addiction to McDonald’s frappes. Mocha, of course.

MY REVIEW

I have always had a soft spot for adventure mysteries! As a kid and especially during my middle school years, I loved getting lost in stories filled with mystery, adventure, unexpected twists, and that feeling of wondering what was going to happen next. So when I came across Quagmire by Sam Campbell, it immediately piqued my interest. There was just something about the adventure-mystery feel of this book that brought back those memories of the kinds of stories I loved reading when I was younger.

And can we talk about the cover art for a minute?! I absolutely adore it! That face had me smiling right away. There is something so expressive and intriguing about the cover that makes you want to pick up the book and find out exactly what is going on. I love when a cover gives you a little taste of the personality and adventure inside the pages, and this one definitely caught my attention.

What I enjoyed most about Quagmire is that it brought back that sense of curiosity and adventure that made mystery books so much fun for me growing up. It’s the kind of story that makes you want to keep turning the pages to see where the journey leads and what will happen next. For me, that’s one of the best things about an adventure mystery… it gives you the opportunity to step away from everyday life and simply enjoy the ride. I am excited to add this one to my daughters reading collection as I know she is gonna love it!

If you’re a fan of adventure, mystery, and stories that spark your curiosity, Quagmire is definitely one to add to your reading list. And honestly, even before opening the book, that fantastic cover had already won me over!
