MY REVIEW
Every once in a while, a children’s book pops up that hits you right in the nostalgia…..and Ode to a Pug: NOT the VET! by Jill Rosen did exactly that for me. I grew up with a pug, and we loved him so much. He was goofy, stubborn, dramatic, sweet… basically everything rolled into one wrinkly little potato. So the moment I started reading this book, it felt like stepping back into my childhood.
Rosen captures the true essence of a pug’s personality so perfectly…..the over-the-top reactions, the hilarious inner monologue, the “Why me?” look anytime something small doesn’t go their way. And the drama around going to the vet? Oh my gosh. Spot on. I can practically hear the snorts, sighs, and frantic attempts to avoid the inevitable appointment. Our pug could sense a vet visit coming a mile away, and nothing—nothing—could convince him that it was for his own good.
But what makes this book more than just funny is the warmth woven through every page. The bond between the pug and its human is sweet and familiar, like the kind of love that made my own childhood pug such an important part of our family. This story captures that gentle truth: yes, pets can be dramatic, but underneath it all is love, loyalty, and a connection that makes even the scariest moments feel safe.
The storytelling has such a fun rhythm to it, making it a fantastic read-aloud for kids. It’s one of those books where you just know children will giggle, point at the pictures, and maybe even recognize their own pets in the pug’s antics.
Final thoughts:
Ode to a Pug: NOT the VET! is charming, heartfelt, and genuinely funny….especially if you’ve ever loved a pug (or been bossed around by one!). Jill Rosen perfectly captures the quirky magic of these little dogs and turns it into a story that’s both comforting and joyfully entertaining.
A delightful read that made me smile, laugh, and remember just how special my own pug was. I was giggling throughout and this is for sure the perfect read for young kids (and adults like myself)!
