MY REVIEW

If you’ve ever watched a child discover something new… like really discover it, with that spark in their eyes… then Danny sabe leer: Danny Can Read will feel like a little piece of magic you recognize instantly.

I picked up this book expecting a sweet story about learning to read… but what I didn’t expect was how deeply it would touch on something so real: what happens when one child starts to grow in a new way, and the other is left trying to figure out where they belong.

At the heart of the story are Danny and Lily… two dinosaur siblings who, at first, are inseparable. Their days are full of imagination and play, the kind that feels familiar if you’ve ever listened to kids invent entire worlds out of nothing. But then Danny learns to read, and everything shifts. His world expands in this beautiful, exciting way… and Lily? She’s suddenly on the outside of something she used to share.

And honestly… that part got me.

Because this book doesn’t pretend those feelings don’t exist. It doesn’t sugarcoat jealousy or sadness or that quiet ache of being left behind. It names those emotions in a way that feels gentle but honest, and I really appreciated that. So many children’s books rush past those moments, but this one sits with them just long enough for kids (and let’s be real—parents too) to recognize themselves.

What I loved most is how the story handles that tension. There’s no villain here. No one is “wrong.” It’s just growth happening at different speeds… and the messy emotions that come with it. And then, slowly, there’s a shift. Lily begins to find her own path, her own strengths, and that’s where the story softens into something really beautiful.

Also, I have to say… being bilingual (English and Spanish) adds such a special layer. It doesn’t feel forced or like an afterthought. It feels like an invitation. Whether you’re raising bilingual kids or just want to introduce another language naturally, it flows in a way that feels accessible and warm.

And the illustrations? They carry so much of the emotion. You can almost feel the shift between joy, pride, and those quieter, harder feelings just by looking at the pages.

This isn’t just a “learning to read” story. It’s a story about patience, empathy, teamwork and letting kids grow into themselves without comparison.

If you’re a parent, a teacher, or honestly just someone who loves thoughtful children’s books, this one is worth sitting with. It opens the door to conversations that matter… about confidence, about jealousy, about celebrating each child for who they are.

And maybe the biggest takeaway for me?

Every child learns something in their own time.
And every child deserves to feel seen while they’re getting there.
