Hosting a dinner party is great fun. It’s an excuse to get everyone together and spend some quality time as friends or as a family. You can impress them with your cooking skills as well as catch up on what’s been going on in all of your lives.
When planning a dinner party, you can do several things to make it as plain sailing as possible. From practicing your recipes before the day to, preparing as much as you can before they arrive, below we have put together some of our top tips on hosting a dinner party.
Practise the recipe in advance
Practice makes perfect! When deciding on what recipe you are going to cook for your guests, make sure you spend some time making it before the day – the more times the better. The last thing you want when hosting a dinner party is the stress of attempting something new for the first time ever. This is when errors can creep in and you start to feel the pressure as the meal you were hoping to serve up, isn’t as good as you thought it would be. If you have a partner or a friend, why not cook it for them on a separate occasion to see what they think before doing it for everyone?
Food prep is key
Take the stress off the evening and prepare as much in advance before everyone arrives. For a lot of the recipes, a lot of the prep can be done in the morning and then finished in the evening. You could season and prepare the meat and almost definitely cut the vegetables ready. Having this done in the morning takes a section of the cooking off your mind and reduces the stress when cooking in front of everyone. Plus, you can then spend more time entertaining your guests instead of being in the kitchen cooking. Prep also reduces any errors that may creep up when cooking, like the timings.
Over prepare instead of under preparing
It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. When having guests over, aim to overcook and order, instead of being careful about what you are buying. This way you never run out of things when you are entertaining, such as drinks. Plus, if anything is left over when your guests have gone home, you can enjoy it the next day – if it’s food – or another week if there is any alcohol or soft drinks left over. Remember to cater for guests who do not drink alcohol, you could buy a bottle of non-alcoholic rum so that you can offer them a drink.
