How to Calm Down When Anxiety Strikes

One of the hardest things to deal with is anxiety. Anxiety can make you feel out of control, it can give you physical symptoms that make you feel like you’re having a heart attack, and it can really mess with your mental health. Understanding anxiety is one thing, but you need to be able to use the right tools to calm yourself down with anxiety strikes.

You can use herbal supplements that you find on websites such as Amedicanna.com, but you might not even know why you’re anxious in the first place to be able to calm it down. The best thing that you can do is calm your body down enough to identify that there is no danger or threat. When you can do this, your body will be able to respond better. Shocking your system back into reality is the next thing you need to do and here are some of the best ways that you can calm down when anxiety strikes even when you’re not expecting it.

*Learn to breathe. When you’re in the middle of a panic or an anxiety attack, the natural thing to do is start hyperventilating. Of course, you can’t actually control this and your breathing will speed up as your heart rate speeds up. Deep breathing will decrease the sensations and help you to slow your thinking down. When you regain control of your breathing you won’t feel so uncomfortable, and your head will be clearer. The best way to do this is to take a deep breath in for five seconds and blow it out for five seconds and repeat this until your heart rate has slowed.

*Use your inner voice. That feeling of impending doom that comes with anxiety can make you feel as if you’re dying. Telling yourself in your mind and out loud that this is just a panic attack, that you are not dying, and that it will be over soon is a good way to help yourself. Saying it out loud makes it real, the more you say it the more you will be able to calm down.

*Grounding exercises can really help. When you start to panic, you need to remember to get back in touch with reality. Finding your center isn’t the easiest thing to do, but there are some things you could do and the five senses will help. Look for five things that you can see, touch, taste, smell, and hear. When you do this, you distract your brain and give yourself a task. You could even take off your shoes and socks and put them on the ground and feel a different texture beneath your skin. That can shock you out of your anxiety.

*Use essential oils. Lavender is one of the most common scents out there, and although there are plenty of essential oils that can help you with panic, lavender is one of the best. Just inhaling the fumes of this particular frequency can help to relax you, and most people with anxiety let’s keep it nearby.
