Publisher’s Book Summary: Meet Dude, the nicest Dude in town! Or so he thinks . . .
One day, Dude decides that he wants to do nice things for his friends and neighbors all day long. But Dude isn’t exactly attentive and tends to forget the most crucial part of helping people: asking first. So when Dude unravels a sweater, frees some dogs, and ruins an ice cream social, he needs to reckon with his own niceness: is it really nice if he wasn’t that helpful? Can Dude and his best friend Fizz save the day before Dude makes too big of a mess?
With hilarious text from Sarah Scheerger and gorgeous illustrations by debut children’s book artist Alex MacNaughton, Dude. Be Nice is a tale of good intentions and not-so-good outcomes, sure to make readers giggle along the way.

MY REVIEW
Book Review: Dude. Be Nice by Sarah Scheerger with Brent & Jamie Camalich
I just finished reading Dude. Be Nice, and honestly…… it was such a fun, meaningful little surprise of a book. On the surface, it’s a lighthearted picture book about a bear named Dude who just wants to be… well, nice. He’s determined to do good deeds all day long, but somewhere between good intentions and actual impact, things go hilariously sideways.
Dude means well…. he just doesn’t think before he acts. He “helps” a friend by unraveling her sweater, “rescues” dogs that weren’t in trouble, and generally leaves a trail of chaos behind. His sidekick Fizz (the true voice of reason) tries to warn him, but Dude’s enthusiasm keeps getting the better of him. It’s funny, adorable, and a little too relatable…..how many times have I rushed in to “help” without asking first?
That’s the heart of this story for me. The book’s message…. that kindness isn’t about doing something for someone, but doing something with them and that really stuck. It’s a great reminder for kids and adults alike that even good intentions need empathy, awareness, and consent.
I also loved the fabulous illustrations by Alex MacNaughton as they are bright and full of personality…. the kind of pages kids will want to linger over. And knowing this story connects to the real-life “dude. be nice.” movement gives it an extra layer of meaning. It’s not just a cute read; it’s a starting point for talking about real kindness in action. As a parent, I love books that make you laugh and think, and Dude. Be Nice hits that sweet spot perfectly. It’s silly enough to make little ones giggle, but thoughtful enough to start genuine conversations about empathy, helping, and listening first. Definitely a must-have for every kids reading collection.
