5 Key Things That Your Kids Should be Learning This School Year
Summertime is coming to an end, and it’s likely that your kids will be going back to school very shortly. As the academic year begins, alongside hoping your kids will excel and pass with flying colors, you’re likely also wondering how you can help as a parent. There is an endless list of helpful things which you can do to aid your kids and boost them to excel in this school year, and many require pushing them out of their comfort zone. For one, you should get them to try new things and learn skills different from the ones they already have. On that note, you’re going to find five key things that your kids should be learning this school year.
How to Make Lunch
One of the life skills that every child should learn is how to make at least one simple meal. It is necessary as it’s a part of teaching your kids how to be independent and it’s a skill they’ll need at every stage of their lives. Some ideas of healthy lunches you can teach your child include healthy chicken pot popovers, cheesy eggs-in-the-hole with bacon, whole-wheat pizza hand pockets, healthy salad-stuffed popovers, and mini whole-wheat chicken pot pies. Teaching your kids how to cook not only ensures that they can enjoy home-cooked meals, but also that they can save all that money they’d end up spending on take out. You should also remember to teach them to make age-appropriate meals as well as educate them on safety in the kitchen to avoid any accidents.
How to Play an Instrument
One of the best things your child can learn while they are still young is how to play an instrument. This is because doing so has immense benefits for their brain, academics, and overall development. There are quite a number of instruments that they could choose from which include the keyboard, bass guitar, violin, and the guitar to name a few. It is likely going to take a number of lessons before they get the hang of it, but you can schedule those for after school or weekends. If your child has shown an interest in playing guitar then take a look on austinguitarlessons.net and get them some lessons booked in! In terms of buying the instrument, in case you’re worried about how expensive it might be, perhaps think about sticking with the cheapest instrument, to begin with. On the other hand, you could opt to look for Musicians Friend coupons as you’re likely to get instruments a lot cheaper that way.
Speaking a New Language
Learning a new language is another thing your child should learn this school year. If they aren’t learning so in school already, consider getting them a tutor to teach them. There are so many benefits to learning a new language and becoming bilingual, such as helping their concentration, improving their coordination, boosting brainpower, and improving test scores. You should find a way to get them learning a new language, as it could help them presently, as well as in the near future. One helpful method that will also be popular with younger people is to make use of software such as Talkie AI. This interactive program can help children to develop their skills in a fun and versatile way, and provide a way of learning that traditional tutors may not be able to.
Doing Laundry
In addition to what’s already been mentioned, another thing your kids should be learning this school year is how to do their own laundry! If you haven’t begun teaching them already, it isn’t too late to start. You’d be surprised at the number of kids that grow up not being able to do their laundry and clean their clothes. You should, therefore, get your kids to watch you as you do the laundry every week. The first thing you can show them is how to measure and add the detergent, choose the settings, and start the machine. It may also be a good idea to teach them about what colors to pair as well to avoid their clothes getting destroyed.
Treating a Wound
You never know when an accident may happen, especially if you have boisterous and energetic kids. For this reason, teaching them how to treat a wound is something they should learn this school year. While some schools include first aid in their curriculum, you should still ensure your child can do it on their own. Having a first aid kit around the house at all times will also ensure that they can practice attending to any wounds they may have.
There are so many skills that you can teach your child, but unfortunately, you can’t teach them all at once. You should, therefore, try teaching them one at a time and be patient while they learn. It might not be the easiest thing to do, but with time, when you see that they begin to flourish academically and in other areas, you should see that it’s worth the effort.

These are great things that all kids should definitely learn! By your title I was thinking subjects in school, not necessary life lessons. Thank you so much for sharing these! I actually homeschool my kids, so a lot of their teaching has to do with every day things like this. I plan on having them take music lessons this year (my oldest is 9, and my other two are 4 &5)!

Great list. I agree we need to make sure we are expanding our children’s mind. Thanks for sharing these ideas.
