Winter hair care tips: how to protect your locks from the cold

Taking care of your hair is a year-round thing, but winter brings its own problems for you to deal with. There are a number of things you need to pay close attention to, to make sure your hair stays looking gorgeous and feeling great, and with a simple plan of action that’s easy to do. Let’s check out some of the best hair care tips for winter to ensure you can keep your locks luscious during the cold season.

Shampoo sparingly

There’s a temptation to wash your hair every day in winter, particularly after it’s taken a battering from the harsh weather, but you really need to go easy on the shampoo. That’s because too much shampooing can increase dryness by stripping your hair of its essential oils. Rather than using the bubbles on a daily basis, stick to twice a week, and use a dry shampoo on the days in between.

Top condition

One thing that goes hand in hand with not over shampooing is making sure that you are providing your hair with enough moisture. Coldness, harsh winds and indoor heating can cause hair to go dry and frizzy, and the best way of combatting that is to condition regularly. However, using the right shampoos and conditioners are just as important. For information about the best purple shampoo for blonde hair as well as other colours and hair types, take a look at the cuddl’s blog! In addition to using a rinse-out conditioner when you do wash, a hair mask or deep-conditioning treatment rich in essential oils once a week will really help retain moisture.

Cover up

When the temperatures drop and the winds climb and the rain starts to fall your hair is at risk of damage. It could be that it starts to dry out or even starts to break a little, but you can protect it with ease. All you have to do is make sure that you wear a hat or headscarf when you’re going out in the elements.

Have regular trims

By having your hair trimmed regularly you’re not only going to look great, you’re also making sure that you get rid of split ends, which will help keep your hair healthy. Those split ends can lead to further damage, and in winter that’s the last thing you want. Keep an eye on the condition of your tips and pay a visit to your hairdresser before they get to the really ragged stage.

Be careful with heat

When it’s freezing cold outside there’s nothing better than a hot bath or shower when you get in. However, you don’t want to use really hot water to wash your hair, as it can add to the dryness and potential damage. Instead, rinse your hair with warm or even cool water to keep it shiny. The same goes for heat styling tools. Straighteners, tongs and dryers are all great, but they can cause dryness if overused.

These hair care tips are really going to help you keep your hair healthy. Put them in place and you’ll find it a whole lot easier to keep your locks in gorgeous condition this winter.

I usually wash my hair daily but now it will be twice a week. As far as using heat products I’ll take heed by cutting back on using the blow dryer so much.
