“Only The Best”: Why Premium Dog Foods Aren’t Always Right For Your Pooch

Hands up right now if the following applies to you. During a time when money has been scarce, you’ve economized on food for yourself so you didn’t have to buy cheaper food for a pet. Check out this guide on PuppyWire for more information about your dogs recommended food intake.

Now, maybe your hand is up right now. Maybe it’s not. But the fact remains that a lot of us dote on our pets so much that we’d go without so they don’t have to. And guess what? That’s absolutely fine. It’s why we have pets – what’s the point of having them if you’re not going to spoil them a little?

So, even though you see big bags of “Xtra Valu” food for the same price as the small bag of quality pet food you put in your trolley, you’re never tempted. There’s no “ah, he’s a dog. He won’t know the difference.” You know he will.

Even if he went ahead and ate the cheaper stuff, he wouldn’t like it as much. Plus, the pricier stuff is packed with healthy ingredients. The saving in vet bills means it pays for itself.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how we rationalize paying more for better pet food. And all of the reasons are legitimate. Pets deserve the best.

However, the way that pet food is often sold to us by manufacturers might convince you they think the same way. Unfortunately, it’s not always the case. If you are trying to figure out what sort of pet food is best though and are still struggling then you might want to take a look at BestPetReviews to help you make a decision on what food to get.

What They Claim May Not Be What’s True

Just as we select food for ourselves based on its health properties, we look out for the right pet foods in the same way. So if our dog’s coat is looking less than shiny and glossy, we’ll pick up a food that says it will benefit that.

The problem is that if we eat something that doesn’t have the effect we expected, we notice more or less immediately and make changes. Your dog can’t turn to you and say “This ‘wellness’ food you’re feeding me? It’s not making me feel great. Actually, I feel a little bloated.” Pet food does not need to meet the same regulations as food for humans.

As a result, as long as no-one challenges it legally, a pet food company can claim almost anything for its food. As dogs don’t have lawyers, it can go a long way before anyone does challenge it.

Beware Of The Wrong Additives

Some additives in pet food are there for all the right reasons. Natural preservatives are important – imagine getting to the bottom of a large bag of cat food that didn’t have some preservative in it. But many companies add things to food which have nothing to do with enhancing the health of your pooch or puss. These include the euphemistic “palatability enhancers.”

A palatability enhancer makes a food taste better, as the name suggests. It also makes the food quite addictive to a pet. To the extent that if you try to feed them something else, they can turn their nose up at it. Given that these additives are often made with fats and salt, they’re going to have an adverse effect on pet health. This is why you might want to start looking elsewhere when it comes to your dog’s diet. If this has put you off investing in some of the premium dog food brands as you are concerned for your dog’s health, you might want to check out some of the best dog food for weight loss. This way, your dog can enjoy his or her food while still saying 100% healthy.

With pets, the important aspects of feeding are much the same as for humans. The more natural the food they’re getting, the better. Looking for more information at sources such as www.bestlargebreedpuppyfood.net/best-blue-buffalo-large-breed-puppy-food is a sound idea. Fewer grains and more antioxidants work well for us, and will for your dog, too.

Variety Is Never A Bad Idea

It’s easy enough for humans to get locked into eating patterns that are not beneficial, even with the best intentions. The idea goes something like: “I enjoy quinoa. Quinoa is good for you. I shall eat more quinoa.” The problem with this is, as healthy as a food may be, no one food gives you all the nutrients you need. Your dog is the same as you in this respect. Make sure you read through plenty of info online about any foods you’re considering buying – take this pure balance review from doggo eats for example. It may give you additional info that you haven’t found on other pages.

Even good foods that are packed with nutrients are not going to be enough, alone, to keep your pet in prime health. Even if a food is specifically sold as “the only food your dog needs,” it’s untrue. Feed a dog nothing but kibbles – even the best ones on the market – and you’ll dehydrate them.

Feeding a dog off-cuts of meat and occasionally muscle – which can be bought cheap from most butchers – will be a health boost. A well-rounded diet (http://www.petmd.com/dog/slideshows/nutrition-center/my-bowl-what-goes-into-a-balanced-diet-for-your-dog) means more than one type of food and plenty of fresh water. And perhaps most importantly of all, don’t assume a food is safe for your dog just because it is expensive.

I found this article very interesting. I have a dog and a cat which I love very much and want the best for them. Thank you for sharing this great information

I definitely want the best for my pet, but I definitely agree that premium foods aren’t always the right thing. My cat won’t even eat premium food.. he likes what he likes and I can’t change that!

I agree the only premium food I could get my cat to eat was Hill’s Science Diet….. and anything else… forget it!

I love the bowl set, and I like that its off the ground, I think about my cats and I don’t really like them eating to close to the floor..

Thank you for sharing. There have been times that we have several different kinds of pet food that look healthy to us, but ultimately the pets win!
